A Buyer's Guide to Diagnostic & Microscope Lamps

Diagnostic handpieces and microscope illuminators cover a wide range of specialist bulb types, often specific to a single equipment brand or model. Here's how to make sense of the main categories and find the right replacement.

Otoscopes & Ophthalmoscopes

These handheld diagnostic tools use small, low-voltage halogen bulbs (commonly 3.5V) designed for compact handpieces. Brands like Welch Allyn specify exact replacement bulbs by model number (e.g. WA03000, WA06000) — these aren't generic bulbs, so matching the exact model reference is the fastest way to find the right part, since physical size and pin spacing are designed specifically for that handpiece.

Slit Lamps

Slit lamps are precision ophthalmic examination equipment, and their bulbs are typically matched to a specific manufacturer's model range (for example, the Haag Streit HS 900-930 series). These bulbs often have a low voltage, high current draw, and a fairly short specified lifespan compared to general lighting, since they're optimised for a specific bright, focused beam rather than longevity. Always check base type carefully — a bulb that's electrically compatible but has a different base or flange size won't physically fit.

Microscope Illuminators

Laboratory and clinical microscopes generally use halogen bulbs in the 6V–24V range with a G4 or similar pin-base, chosen for stable, consistent colour output across the viewing field. Some specs (like Philips 5761, 6V 30W G4) are less commonly stocked than mainstream medical halogen bulbs, so if your microscope calls for a specific, less common spec, it's worth securing stock in advance rather than waiting until the bulb fails.

Endoscopy & Surgical Visualisation Light Sources

Higher-end diagnostic and surgical visualisation equipment (such as Olympus endoscopy light source units) typically use xenon lamps rather than halogen, delivering higher intensity and better colour accuracy for detailed visual work. These are usually higher-wattage (200W+) and specified by an exact equivalent part number (e.g. MAJ-1817, Excellitas J2022) tied to the equipment brand.

Key things to check before ordering

  1. Exact model number on the old bulb or in your equipment's manual — this matters more here than in most other lamp categories, since diagnostic bulbs are often brand/model-specific
  2. Base and flange type — even within the same voltage/wattage, base geometry varies between manufacturers
  3. Whether it's halogen or xenon — these aren't interchangeable, and higher-end diagnostic equipment increasingly specifies xenon for its colour accuracy and intensity
