Medical and surgical lighting relies on a narrow, well-established range of halogen lamp types — but with so many voltage, wattage, and base combinations in use across different equipment brands, it's easy to order the wrong one if you're not sure what to look for. Here's what actually matters when replacing a bulb in examination or surgical lighting.

Why halogen is still standard in clinical lighting

Despite the rise of LED, halogen remains widely used in medical and surgical lamps because of its colour rendering accuracy — the light halogen produces is very close to natural daylight across the full colour spectrum, which matters when a clinician needs to accurately assess skin tone, tissue colour, or fine detail. Many established medical lighting fixtures (Hanaulux, and various Medilite/Medilight-branded systems) were engineered specifically around halogen's output characteristics, which is why exact-spec replacement is important — a "close enough" LED substitute can shift colour perception in ways that matter clinically.

Common voltage and wattage ranges

Medical exam and surgical lamps commonly run in these ranges:

  • Low output (20–50W): typically used in smaller examination lights and diagnostic handpieces
  • Mid output (77–100W): common in general examination and procedure lighting
  • High output (150–250W): used in surgical and operating theatre lighting where stronger, more concentrated illumination is required

Voltage is just as important as wattage — common voltages include 6V, 8V, 12V, 22.8V, and 24V, and these are not interchangeable even if wattage matches, since running a bulb at the wrong voltage will significantly shorten its life or cause it to fail immediately.

Base types you'll commonly encounter

  • G4 — compact two-pin push-fit base, common in smaller diagnostic equipment
  • G6.35 / GY6.35 / GZ6.35 — the most common base family in medical and surgical halogen lamps; the small differences here relate to pin locking type, so it's worth checking which variant your fixture uses
  • Bx22d — bayonet-style base found in some dental and Hanaulux-brand exam lights

Special variants worth knowing about

  • "Axial focus" lamps — the filament is positioned for a tighter, more directional beam rather than general flood lighting; used where the manufacturer specifies precise focal alignment
  • XIR (infrared-coated) lamps — reflect heat back onto the filament for brighter output at the same power draw, reducing heat at the lamp head, useful in close-contact fittings
  • FCR (fully colour-rendering) glass — used where accurate colour perception is especially critical, such as tissue or sample examination

How to make sure you order the right one

  1. Check the old bulb for a printed model code (e.g. "Osram 64627," "Dr Fischer 24V 50W")
  2. If unreadable, check your equipment's spec plate or manual for the specified replacement part
  3. Confirm voltage, wattage, and base type all match — not just one or two of the three
  4. If your equipment is a known brand/model (Hanaulux, Medilite/Medilight systems), search by that name for a faster match
